Oakland is a very large urban area found in the Bay Area of the State of California. Oakland has a population of approximately four hundred twenty thousand residents, making it one of the fifty largest cities in the United States and one of the ten largest cities in the state of California. Oakland serves as the county seat of Alameda County, and is part of the San Francisco Bay Area Metropolitan Area. The original inhabitants of the area which is now considered Oakland were Native Americans, specifically those of the Huchiun Tribe of Native Americans, which fell under the larger conglomerate of the Huchiun People. The first non-Indian individuals to explore the region were Spanish conquistadors, who traversed the Bay Area around the year seventeen seventy two. They did not, however, establish any large residential centers. Large towns, including Oakland, were established towards the middle of the nineteenth century, and grew rapidly upon the arrival of railroads, cable cars, manufacturing, and shipping yards. Oakland played a pivotal role during the second world war, and continues to be important to the music industry.

Oakland is home to the Golden State Warriors, the Oakland Raiders, and the Oakland Athletics, ensuring that sports fans have plenty to enjoy. The educational needs of Oakland are met by a number of private and public institutions, including the Oakland Unified School District, the College Preparatory School, Catholic Bishop O'Dowd High School, and Saint Elizabeth High School. There are also a number of colleges and universities, including the California College of the Arts, Patten University, and Holy Names University.
